Best practices for attracting, hiring and retaining veterans form the SHRM Foundation’s new educational program developed for HR professionals, hiring managers and front-line supervisors. The multifaceted, free Veterans at Work Certificate Program is part of the SHRM Foundation’s commitment to building more-inclusive workplaces.
Participants in the program, which launches Nov. 14, will learn about the value that skilled veterans bring to the civilian workplace, as well as how to engage and integrate these talented professionals into their organizations. The program’s content is based in part on The Recruitment, Hiring, Retention & Engagement of Military Veterans by Deborah Bradbard and James Schmeling (SHRM Foundation, 2018), a new guidebook that makes the business case for hiring veteran candidates.
The guidebook outlines the important role that HR professionals and hiring managers can play in the successful transition of veterans from military service to civilian employment. It includes evidence-based practice guidelines and a list of resources on veteran and military hiring initiatives.
To earn the Veterans at Work certificate, participants must complete several program components, including content review, online training, brief quizzes, and pre- and post-participation surveys. Ten professional development credits (PDCs) toward recertification are available to SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential-holders.
